Step-By-Step

IJS offers several step-by-step instructional guides regarding the use of our products.

  • Disk Cutters

    Provided by Pepetools, INC.

The cutting end of the punch is the shinny end. The black end is the impact end.

Clean all the oil or grease off but you should leave a light coat of oil on the cutter to prevent rust.

The posts that hold the two plates together are not to be removed. These posts not only hold the two plates, but also are set in correct alignment with the disc holes.

The disc cutter is designed so that the two plates can be separated although it is not necessary to completely separate the plates in order to cut disc. Follow these steps for successful disc cutting.

Remove all the punches from the plates

Raise the top plate enough to place the metal into position over the size disc you wish to punch and slide the top plate down on the metal.

Select the correct punch that fits into the hole size you have selected. With care and ease, insert the proper disc punch into the cutter. Do not force the punch into the hole rather turn the punch clockwise or ccw and ease the punch in place. The tolerance is very close which is necessary to produce a clean cut.

Strike the punch on the black side with a hammer with sufficient force to punch through the metal. After cutting the disc, lift the disc cutter and the disc and punch will be completely free of the cutter.

Please note that when separating the two plates, the oil that is on the cutter for rust prevention creates a suction which might make it slightly difficult to separate the two plates.

Once the plates are separated, place 1 cent coin between the plates when not in use. Do not remove the oil coating as this will invite rust.

  • Crucible Glazing

Before using a new crucible made of graphite, silicon carbide or clay, the interior of the crucible should be glazed using a saturated solution of Boric Acid and Methyl Alcohol. The solution should be painted on the crucible wherever the molten metal will come in contact with the crucible, and the complete upper lip of the crucible. The purpose is to prevent the composition material of the crucible from sloughing off into the molten mass and being carried into the casting, and secondly, to extend the useful life of the crucible.

The crucible should be heated until the glaze is clearly evident completely covering the surfaces to be glazed. If after the heating areas of the crucible do not show a shiney surface (glaze), reapply more of the solution and reheat until glaze temperature has been reached again.

When using an Electromelt, once the interior has been well glazed and the crucible used in a pour, the upper area of the crucible should be recoated with the glaze each time the crucible is used again. Coat the crucible prior to adding metal, and as the furnace raises the temperature of the metal added, it will simultaneously reglaze the crucible before the metal becomes molten.
